August birthstone
August’s birthstone is peridot
A lime green stone for strength, good luck and light. The U.S. list also gives spinel and sardonyx.
About peridot
- Peridot is gem-quality olivine, one of the few gems that only comes in one color: its yellow-green comes from iron in the crystal.
- It forms deep in the Earth’s mantle and reaches the surface in lava. It has also been found in meteorites.
- Ancient Egyptians mined it on an island in the Red Sea and called it the gem of the sun.
Also for August: spinel and sardonyx
- Spinel was added in 2016. For centuries it was mistaken for ruby: the “Black Prince’s Ruby” in Britain’s Imperial State Crown is a spinel.
- Sardonyx, the oldest August stone, is chalcedony banded in reddish brown and white, carved into seals and cameos since ancient Rome.
