About birthstones

Good to
know.

What are the birthstones for each month?

January: Garnet. February: Amethyst. March: Aquamarine, Bloodstone. April: Diamond. May: Emerald. June: Pearl, Alexandrite, Moonstone. July: Ruby. August: Peridot, Spinel, Sardonyx. September: Sapphire. October: Opal, Tourmaline. November: Topaz, Citrine. December: Turquoise, Tanzanite, Zircon.

Who decided the birthstones?

The modern U.S. list was set by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) in 1912. The American Gem Trade Association has added stones since: alexandrite for June in 1952, tanzanite for December in 2002 and spinel for August in 2016.

Why do some months have more than one birthstone?

Newer stones were added beside the old ones, often to offer a less expensive or easier-to-find choice, so June, August, October, November and December each have two or three.

What is the rarest birthstone?

Tanzanite, one of December’s stones, is mined in only one place on Earth, near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Alexandrite (June) and fine red spinel (August) are also rare.
