A shifting rainbow colors stone for hope, creativity and faithfulness. The U.S. list also gives tourmaline.
About opal
- Opal flashes color as it moves because it’s made of tiny spheres of silica stacked in a grid, which split light like a prism.
- Most of the world’s opal comes from Australia, where it is the national gemstone.
- Opal holds water inside it, sometimes up to a fifth of its weight, so it can crack if it dries out.
Also for October: tourmaline
- Tourmaline, the second October stone, comes in more colors than any other gem; pink tourmaline is the usual birthstone pick.
